Howdy Car Lover!
Do you know what men with awesome cars have in common? They just can’t stop customizing it. I know your car is an absolute beauty, but you just want her to be even more gorgeous, yeah?
I can feel you. It’s just you have to add new decor once in a while in its rig, and it’s absolutely fine.
If you’re someone who has been into this ‘customizing thing’ for years, I don’t think I have to tell you how LED tail-lights add value to your car.
This is where you need to learn how to make LED tail lights, though. Why? Getting the LED tail-light according to your own desire, can give you a hard time. Besides, you have to waste a lot of cash as well.
Why waste your money when you can make LED tail-lights all by yourself? Makes sense, right? Well, making these lights isn’t a tough job, my friend. It’s just easy-peasy. Want to know how you can make one? Let’s take you for a spin.
How to Make LED Tail Lights?
So, you’re up for making LED tail-lights? Awesome! Below are the steps that you can follow so that you can make your very own custom made tail lights. Let’s not waste any time. The clock is ticking.
Remove the Covering
First off, you’ll need to remove the plastic covering off your car’s tail light. Make sure you go real slow and steady, though. One wrong move can turn the tables completely.
Next, you’ll have to unscrew the used tail-lights. You can use a screwdriver for this process. However, make sure you don’t harm any of the wire connections or the lights. If you break the lights somehow as you do your job, you’re done-for brother.
Use an Oven
Next, you’ll have to heat the used lights. For this, you can put them inside an oven. However, make sure you don’t overheat the lights at all. Too much heat can make cracks on the glass, or they can even break it.
While heating, you’ll have to set the temperature somewhere between 150 to 200 degrees. As for duration, 3 minutes will be enough to get your job done. You can go for more, but it shouldn’t be more than 5 minutes at max.
As you keep on heating, it will make the sealant soft enough. This is when you can use a knife to cut the sealants. Now, you’ll be able to open the lens of the light. But here’s something you need to keep in mind, though. Make sure you cut in such a way where the connections are present.
A Thermo-Softening Plastic Can Come in Handy
For molding, the thermo-softening plastics are just perfect. You can transform them into any shape you want. All you need to do is apply a specific temperature and voila!
You need to mold the plastic so that it forms a plate where you can insert the LED lights in. A heat gun always comes handy in this case. Just make sure the shape is similar to the pattern you’re using the tail-lights currently with.
But be careful, though. Make sure you don’t use any type of hair dryer to heat it as the temperature in this device is pretty shallow. You’ll need to heat the plastic, and a heat gun should be enough for you to get the job done.
Once you’re done with the molding part, you can customize the plate using different colors.
Drill the Plastic Plates
Now, it’s time for you to drill the plates, and you got to do it evenly. You’ll have to keep an eye on the drilling so that it’s clear enough for the LED to get inserted correctly.
Remember the pattern of every row and column? Well, you got to follow the same pattern here as well.
Make sure you hold the plates properly as you drill. You can also use a clamp so that you can attach the plates, and it will make your drilling process easier.
Insert the LED Lights Inside the Drill Holes
You’ll find a super glue very handy for this process. You have to apply the glue to each and every light and make sure the lights are inserted carefully inside the drill holes. Don’t forget to buy a branded paste.
Once you’ve inserted the LED lights inside the holes, you’ll have to wait for a few minutes so that they can get dried out. Afterward, check if the LEDs got tightly attached to the holes or not.
Connect the Resistors to the LEDs
If you’re done with everything I told you earlier, it’s time for the resistors to go inside the holes, which are located closer to the LEDs. You’ll find both the positive and negative sides of these lights. The one with the long end is the positive side, while the other one is negative.
While taking one end that comes with the resistor, you’ll have to solder it towards the positive side that comes with the LED. You can use a soldering iron-tool so that there’s a good connection between both of the metals. Keep on following this process in case of every LED.
Do the Wiring
One wrong move while you’re dealing with the wiring, you won’t see the LEDs to lighten up. So, always check the wire colors that are present in your car. Make sure the wires are correctly wrapped in the tail-lights.
Fit the Tail-Lights with Plastic Plates in Your Car
After wrapping the wires very strongly and tightly, fit the plates and the lights perfectly inside your car. Use a screwdriver and screw where it’s necessary.
Ending the Process Using a Sealant
Time for finishing it up. You can use a spray or liquid sealer to seal the place. Now, you have to be slow and steady. Don’t put a lot of pressure on the sealant.
All done? Now, let it dry for 2 to 3 hours.
Time to Check the Brightness|
Phew! You’ve passed all the toughest parts. Now, it’s time for you to check if everything is right. Turn the lights on and check the intensity. If you’re satisfied with the performance, give yourself a big thumbs up as you’ve completed the project.
If somehow the light gets dimmer, you can check the connection of the wiring.
Now that you know how to make LED tail lights, I don’t think you will have a problem making one. And guess what? If you become very good at this, you can make LED tail lights for your fellow car lovers as well.
Take notes, get to work, and complete your project. It’s time to turn your car into an absolute beast.
